New Blog en Español!

New Blog!

Not being a native speaker makes it hard enough to generate useful and reliable content...

So I just decided to start a new blog, this time in Spanish or castellano, where I will be able to make real use of the little knowlege I´m acquiring day by day in this adventure called Egaroo.

I´ve found so many amazing sites and blogs that it will be a waste not being able to talk about them...

So if you speak a little Spanish o de hecho lo hablan y leen como Dios manda, you are more than welcome to visit my new blog: www.egaroo.wordpress.com

Besides, it was time to make the change to that beautiful application called WordPress... if you are still using BlogSpot, you should really consider make it too... and this is coming from a newbie in blogging!

Anyway, this blog will be updated with general news about the development of Egaroo as a small Startup.

My Power is gonne

Damm it!
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.
Hum, the first time ever I didn´t take home my laptop... and voilá! Egaroo´s offices (well, the office from where I manage Egaroo) were robbed this morning at 2AM. And my Power Book (with at least 100 hand made banners ready to upload, among other current works on progress) is gone. It will take some time to start over again uploading new banners, but I expect next week I will reorganize my day job schedule (since I won´t be able to work at night from home) to keep Egaroo alive.

Why create banners for strangers? It's a Ego thing.

Well, it’s official: what started as a company venture has become a merely personal project: Egaroo.com

After all, I’m just stating here what I’ve been doing the last 6 months: seeking interesting websites, creating banners and uploading them to my little directory, witch has become sort of a visual list of all my favorites.

The point is nobody has asked me to do this, witch could be only understand as a very personal approach to share my findings to the world.

Just like you people add text links in your blogs to interesting sites you have found, I decided simply to make it the hard way.

My goal now is to keep creating clean and acceptable designed banners (using existing visual elements from every site) to make my searches easier and more attractive. Quite a long bookmarked sites list to feed my directory…

Why create banners for total strangers, you may ask. Well, first of all is a aesthetical thing; this way I rest assure only acceptable designed banners (and content relevant sites) will be listed at Egaroo.com. Secondly, not lots of people or webmasters know about egaroo, so they can’t ask me to review their sites and create a banner for them, or do it themselves by creating an account and uploading their own banner.

(By the way, if you own any of the sites listed here feel free to contact me in order to give you your personal Log In info to access your profile and manage your cool banner from there).

So far I have created, tagged and uploaded almost 500 banners (at least 75 more have been uploaded by external users), and my plans are keep working on my long list of ever-growing favorites. An endless task, I know, with hundreds of thousands websites worth listing and just 5 hours a day (after my day job –witch regularly ends at 7-8 PM), but I’m starting to get addicted to it… It’s so cool believe this effort could be useful to others fellow surfers.

So far, so good. Need to go back to work on new banners…

Want me to review your site and create a banner for you? (I won’t ever charge for that).
Contact me. I’ll add your site to my list, it will take sometime but eventually you’ll find it uploaded.

Cheers.

And this are the numbers from Bla.st.

Just a peek at how your CRM may work at egaroo.
This case is interesting, since I uploaded a card to this site the same day its owner posted his banner at egaroo.

2007 has just arrived

New book
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Yeah, It has been way too long until this new post.
Too much work at the office and not enough time even to take vacations (or read a decent advertising book... by the way, Taschen DO rules)

Well, so far, so good. Traffic has been improving, egaroo has already reached 500 banners on its search engine database and I'm more than ever willing to keep the fight.

Among some new news, I just found the first copycat to egaroo concept: xplodee dot com (Not linked here on purpose). Check their bidding for PHP programmers:

PHP Freelancers

Should I feel flattered? Well, if somebody else has made the effort to replicate your own concept, it could mean your business model has a point.
Not results on any search made, except two or three keywords... you can bet it's not an easy ride making an idea like this to grow... the guy is from India... a amazing growing market by itself...

Just a little reminder about how egaroo works:
1. Design your banner
2. Register, identify and upload your banner
3. Change your banner design and keywords as needed and as many times as you want
4. If you have more than one website, you can upload up to ten banners from your profile
and manage their keywords and designs individually.
5. Check your traffic from your profile
6. In the near future, you will be able also to add interesting websites found at egaroo to your favorites, thus becoming the first visual bookmarking free service.

About point 1: if you have problems designing your own banner, feel free to contact me and I will design one using elements from your website for free.

I know, I'll try to keep posting more regularly. Finally I think I found the right theme for this blog: web banners design. Obvious, isn't? ;)

Cheers

Welcome everyone! Ya era hora Mr. Black!

Say hi to Mr. Black
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Finally! Egaroo system has been changed to its Free mode. I will change all the old texts tomorrow. By now please feel free to register here your website and upload your Free banner, if you already have one designed. No charges will be made during nor after your registration.

Please notice your banner will have to compete against excellent, good and average designed banners to attract users attention, so BAD designing will have no chances. Try to keep a good design level and every banner owner will be a winner.

Also keep in mind that content is what really matters most, so if your site isn't offering valuable, or at least legal content or services, you will run the risk of being flagged by other users (a future feature that will be implemented to allow you help us make egaroo.com a valuable, clean and interesting Alternative Free Directory).

Welcome aboard. Now we will find if egaroo was really a good idea. Spread the word!

Hey YouTube Users!

Egaroo Experience at YouTube
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Final changes near to an end!
Mr. Blue is sick at home, but still working on Egaroo via internet.
We are almost done with the system change to the Free version... sorry everyone about the delay... soon, very soon you will see your own banners at egaroo.com linking to your websites!

In other order of things, but related to the egaroo concept, I just started a group at YouTube! I'm brand new at this, so I'm just figuring out how it works... is an experiment I'll carry to see how viral (and how bad or good idea) this group can be.

The idea is to create a huge recopilation of YouTube users' faces and web sites addresses in only one month, so every little help in spreading the word is always welcome.

If you want to join and be part of it, visit www.youtube.com/group/egarooexperiment

Let's see how viral such a odd idea (another one) can become.
Jesus! I need 30 hours days! ...and some vacations too...

See you around

Egaroo is gonna be Free, Gratis! (English & Castellano)

Sunday. egaroo's funky world
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Yeap, thanks to you all, I decided to give egaroo that direction. Later on we'll figure out how to make it profitable (without ever charging you, our friends) but for now what matters is to make our banners data base grow.

This is gonna be the opportunity for everyone to advertise using web banners, like the big fishes, using an innovative and unique marketing tool completly free!

Have to work on the new copy to explain everything on egaroo's home page and make some system checking to make possible the Free uploading (already started that last Sunday, see pic).

How much time? Well, I expect two weeks at max to officially announce it.

By now, just keep visiting us and telling everybody about egaroo.
You are going to become our voice, since we only have this blog and our photos to let the world know about this idea.

More on how egaroo works, in the entries below... keep reading to have a complete view.

Thanks a lot!

Castellano

Almost decided to make it FREE

Egaroo screen shot
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Hello everybody, some news here.
For those of you who are here for the first time, a little explanation:
I'm currently carrying a small "poll": should I make egaroo.com totally free to upload your banners or charge a small fee? So far I'm almost certain it will be the first choice (FREE) but it would take some time to change the "paid purchase" process to a "Free" one.

Please be patient, in just a short time period the system will allow all of you to have your free banners here. Stay tuned and don't miss the opportunity to be part of this experiment!

And thank you all people for the amazing response in letting me know what you think about our idea and if you would like to have it for free. Spread the word. Soon you and your friends and colleagues will find here an interesting new and alternative traffic venue.

See you.
More in how egaroo works in the entries below.

Thanks!

This is how Egaroo works

I just prepared an additional explanation about how Egaroo works. I hope it may help you people to see the picture we see.

Egaroo is open to everyone: bloggers, free lance writers, pop and mom e-businesses, architects, big corporations, music studios, independent music bands, eco tourism lodges, teenagers from My Space, movies, web design studios... you name it.
At the end Egaroo will be seen as the most comprehensible, open and innovative search engine/directory to find anything you could need or imagine.

Every buyer will have to enlist its banner on one category.
When people visit egaroo home page the system will randomly display 20 banners per page.
If you don't start a search, after 20 seconds the page will upload 20 new banners, none of them related to any industry in particular an so on. You wanted to find a web design agency in London but at being at egaroo's home page find a banner from a coffee shop in Seattle that called your attention? Click. You can later start over your former search. This way we ensure every banner the possibility to get clicks, even thou you weren't looking for that service in particular.

Only when you select the industry you are interested to dig into, the system will show those industry related banners. Every search made from different computers at the same time will show different results. Nobody will ever again pay more to always appear first.
And finally, people using our "Search" section will write their own keywords to get results, just like you do it in Google, and the principle of random displaying will work again and again.

You will pay 100 dollars for your banner space (yours for a full year) and will be allowed to login and swap out your banner at will, as well as edit your banner Keywords, Language/Location, Industry settings (all parameters to identify it and make possible any search) as many times as you want at no additional cost.

That's basically how things happen here. Just one more thing:
Help us spread the word to help you get more traffic from egaroo.
If you have a client, colleague or friend who might be interested in online advertising using a innovative and eye catching new medium, just tell them about us.

Soccer World Cup Final: Brazil - Ecuador?

Brazil Soccer Team
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

The Fifa 2006 Soccer World Cup has shown some surprises. Small teams show everybody that size doesn't matter when trying big enterprises. So our favorite team this week is Ecuador. Let's see how they do tomorrow playing with Germany.

While working on this I've found really nice people. From England to Chile, you can always rest assure there's other young entrepreneurs willing to believe in crazy ideas. Just let me figure out how to make text links in here. Next I'll let you know about some of my new found friends and mentors.

Mary Light is just 20 years old but she is doing great so far. Pursuing a career in Animation, when asked about what she thinks about working with us, she responded: are you guys actually doing any work in here?

Besides I spend too much time writing those little notes on this pic at Flickr trying to describe how I have organized my Safari bar. I promise to learn how to use Technorati, so next time you will see a more decent and valuable chart instead.

A little experiment

Screen shot
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

I just had an idea! How would you like having your banner posted at egaroo for free?! Let's do this: the first 100 people who send their banner design to my email address (black at blackgreenblue dot com) will have a full calendar year at egaroo for free. You have nothing to lose, besides it gives me something to take care of while Mr. Blue finish his mundane duties.

Do you have a small business? A medium one? or simple know someone who has his own company? (doesn't matter how big or small). Or you want to bring serious traffic to you exgirfriend's blog about how much she is missing you? This is what egaroo.com is about. Why I am proppposing you this? well, until we can finish programming the last corrections on egaroo system, I would like to make this little experiment to find out if you people are really reading this blog.

The specs for your banner are as follows:

468 x 60 pixels
jpeg or gif
Max file size: 15k
No flash banners please
Your gif banner CAN be animated

You can be as creative as you want, or conservative, if that's your style. You can design it yourself or paid a graphic designer to do it professionally for you. Remember that egaroo will display your banner according to search criteria of our users and eventually there's gonna be lots and lots of banners in every category.

Please send your email with your name and email... and of course with your banner!

See you

A little history

Station
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

I think all of you guys (yeah, sure, besides myself, I think there's nobody else reading all this) need a little history lesson to understand what we are trying to prove here.
Black, Green & Blue is a group of three partners working together in their graphic design/web developement studio.
Since 2003 we've been fighting to become a decent option for young entrepreneurs, being involved in interesting projects. Currently we manage a growing portfolio of clients, having good perspectives of obtaining new and bigger accounts.
But we have always tried to find new opportunities to grow without depending on others people's ideas.
So one day we came up with this odd idea: creating a website/search engine dedicated solely to banners from around the world. It won't matter how big or small your business is, you could even advertise your blog with us. From the moment I envisaged the concept, I knew it had a real opportunity to become something really big.
We have almost finished egaroo (it's not working properly yet and we are adjusting some details) but, as aforementioned, we have to manage our tight time (with current clients and projects) to finish the job. This blog is an attempt to show you the developement of an idea without any capital behind it and its possible success. It is, as well, my personal point of view of the events that fill my life in this adventure. Why an aventure? Besides being a small internet startup, there are more conditions that conveys and gives egaroo.com a special twist, starting from the fact that we are not what a regular startup company located on a regular location is supposed to be... (he, he, I know, I just confused everything up a lot...) But that my friends is all I'm gonna tell you by now. If you want to know more about us, or if this crazy idea becomes what we are specting it to become, stay tunned... there's gonna be a lot of surprises...

Wasting time

Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Every time we are ready to finish programming egaroo, there's always a nasty and selfish client who doesn't care about our great IDEA. Gotta kill them all. Until then, Green and Blue will have to keep the pace. And I will have to stay calm and not shoot anybody. Well, not until we launch egaroo, he, he.

Just in case

Just an aclaration to everyone:
our site (egaroo) is not working yet.
We are finishing some details and the search engine is not working yet.
Some of the banners you will find there are not from real clients, they are there for testing purposes only.
Some of them are real ones, but no valid identification or links have been uploaded to the system.
So, be patient. As soon as egaroo get online, we'll posted here.

Being concious enough

Well, I've been thinking the last two days about all this. In fact, all this have been on my mind since I realize the power and potential of egaroo as a internet tool.
At the time when this idea ends as a successfull startup, or as a total failure, you will surely know all the little nuances that make this project an interesting experiment.
It is not about a big flat TV Screen, or a nice car, or a expensive house... It's about believing ideas can change your reality if you are open enough to see them. It's about freedom to do the things that are really important in life, and being responsible for the people who surrounds you.
Is it about money? The answer is YEAP. But it goes beyond that.
You see, when you grow up in a place like starupland, you get to realize there are other realities, and when you accept that, and you experience these others realities every day, money keeps its value, that's for sure, but in a different and healthier shape.
Hum... there are so many things left to do. Gotta go.

My power

My power
Originally uploaded by Mr Black at startupland.

Just getting organized and testing (again) the whole system. I just stop to take a pic of my little friend here. The best buy ever! In ancient times, when I was just a humble copywriter, nothing seemed to work better than a simple PC... until I decided to do my own layouts and designs, then... I saw the light!
That's my space at the office... I just hate that green wall (nothing personal, Green)
See you

Are you jumpin' yet?

Soon I'll get some icon logos ready to post here.
The idea is everybody could download them and use their favorite as a link to egaroo.
Help us to spread the word!

Well, this is where we are trying to take the world by surprise... one banner at a time, you know.
Until egaroo come out officially, we have decided not to tell you our real location, so this is gonna be like the only view you will ever have of our headquarters, he, he.

Not good for your health

Yeah, these are tough times here at startupland... one more reason to come up with odd ideas as egaroo.
That really doesn't bother me (an empty fridge I mean) but I know I should be more careful with what I eat (in this case, with what I don't eat, he, he).
Saturday afternoon, I'm at the office testing the site and updating the blog.
